3. See The Congress Bridge Bats

How to see the bats in Austin

The largest urban bat colony in the world resides right here in Austin Texas, and every evening at dusk you can watch 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats emerge for their nightly feeding!

Kids love to watch this (because bats are so cool!) and it’s a fun, family-friendly activity to do in Austin because it’s also really fun for adults. Note that this only happens in the summer months, from late March-early October.

I'm a local and I think it's really fun to bring my kids to see the bats, but it's especially popular among Austin tourists. I wrote this article about exactly how to see the Austin bats.

Austin Bats

It’s really fun to get some tacos at Veracruz All Natural (there’s a walk-up window at The Line hotel, which is next to the Bat Bridge) and enjoy tacos and queso for dinner while you wait for the bats to come out of their hiding spot and watch the sunset.

Of course, it’s a totally different experience to do ACL with kids versus just going alone as an adult, so be sure that you’re up for treating ACL Fest as a family affair.

Wildflower Center | Things to do in Austin with kids

The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, located in south Austin but owned by The University of Texas at Austin, is one of the BEST places to bring kids in Austin. Yeah, it's kind of far south, but it is 100% worth the drive.

The botanical garden features more than 900 species of native Texas plants in both garden and natural settings and is home to a breadth of educational programs and events.

For kids who are interested in learning about nature and the outdoors, the Wildflower Center has youth classes and events.

Their informal weekly "nature play" activities, summer camps, and formal classes are all part of their environmental education. It's just a FUN place where kids can run around in nature and be kids!

19. Bike Around The Lake

Lady Bird Lake Boardwalk

Don’t feel like renting a kayak or a canoe? Just go on a bike ride or walk around the lake! The Hike & Bike Trail is a totally customizable trail. I've enjoyed many beautiful mornings and afternoons with my little ones just wandering around the lake, biking on the trail, or enjoying a quiet stroller walk.

You can park underneath the Mopac Bridge or in the parking lot at Auditorium Shores and walk pretty much any length between ½ a mile and 10 miles, depending on which bridge you use to cross the water and make your own loop.

The trail around Lady Bird Lake offers a beautiful view of the Austin skyline, and it’s a fun, popular place to spend time in Austin on the weekends. Here's a list of places you can rent bikes and bike around the trail!

21. Catch Air

Catch Air Austin

It took me way too long to discover this place (it's pretty far northwest Austin), but Catch Air is an epic indoor playground for kids around ages 2-8. Add this to your list of rainy day activities in Austin!

There are all sorts of tunnels, slides, and climbing structures. I love that there's a designated play space for little toddlers 4&under so they won't get pummeled by the big kids.

I also love that you can bring your own socks here and you don't have to buy overpriced branded socks like a lot of places make you do. You still have to pay for admission, but it's nothing too crazy. And this is a really fun way to spend a rainy afternoon in Austin with your kids.

22. Jump In Deep Eddy Pool

Deep Eddy Pool

If you’re in Austin with very young kids, Deep Eddy is a better alternative to Barton Springs. And if you want even more ideas, here are 15 of the best Austin swimming holes.

Deep Eddy has a beach-style entry on one side, and it’s a cement-lined swimming pool (Barton Springs has a dirt/rock floor with some plants growing from it’s very slippery in certain spots) and Deep Eddy is just a bit easier for families with babies/toddlers.

Just like Barton Springs, it’s spring-fed and stays nice and cold all year round! After you swim, be sure to stop at Pool Burger (it’s just across the parking lot - you can walk there from the pool) to grab some burgers and fries, and cocktails for lunch.

It’s a really beautiful garden, and if you enjoy visiting Botanical gardens in various cities around the country, be sure to check this one off your list! Visit the Taniguchi Japanese Garden, Riparian Streambed, and the stunning Rose Garden.

All of these gardens are also connected by streams, waterfalls, and ponds filled with lots of Koi...it’s a great place for kids to release some energy and run around for a bit.

There are dozens of playgrounds in Austin where your family can bring picnic blankets and your favorite breakfast/lunch tacos, coffee, burgers, or sandwiches. From Round Rock all the way down to Circle C, there are incredible public parks in Austin.

Since some of the big, popular playgrounds (Waterloo Greenway, Alliance Children's Garden, Circle C Metro Park) often get really crowded, especially on weekends I created this map of fun playgrounds in Austin. Click around and find something near you!

One great option? Go to the Roy G. Guerrero playground. This park has giant green space, a fenced-in playground area, and lots of free parking. Whichever location you choose, visiting a playground in Austin is one of the best things to do with toddlers and young kids. And it’s free!

Homeslice is a pizza restaurant in SoCo that offers some of the best New York-style pizza in Austin. It’s kind of iconic, and it’s definitely a very kid-friendly thing to do in Austin.

Both the SOCO location and the north location have a spacious patio in the backyard and indoor seating. Their New York-style pizza has a crisp, stone-baked crust and it’s served in giant slices that are so big that diners usually fold them down the middle so they can eat it...in the typical NY-style way.

Worth note: the SOCO location is much more iconic, but the North location has an outdoor playscape, which is great if you’ve looking for a kid-friendly Austin restaurant experience.

Inner Space Cavern | things to do in Austin with kids

Inner Space Cavern is the best-preserved cave to explore in Texas! It’s also one of the most comfortable caves to explore, with easy-to-see pathways and a constant temperature of 72 degrees (keep in mind that it can sometimes feel like 80 degrees with the humidity).

It was hidden for more than 10,000 years, but it was found by a core drilling team from the Texas Highway Department.

It’s actually only been public since 1966! But since then, tens of thousands of people have walked through this cave. The cave features stunning formations, spacious halls, and prehistoric animal bones.

Note: it’s not good for strollers, so plan this Austin kid activity for little ones who can walk on their own.

In the spring and summer, you can pick your own fruit (paying only for what you take).

It’s a great spot to visit year-round! Events include the Fall Festival, Christmas Festival, Sunflower Festival, Easter Egg Hunts, plus other non-holiday events.

49. Indoor Skydiving at iFly

At iFly Austin, you can let your kids experience how the free fall feels!  Without a parachute or an airplane, kids can actually safely experience the thrill of skydiving.

You can "fly" indoors thanks to the vertical wind tunnel that lifts you. They’ll figure out how to float in the air after just a few "flights," and they’ll be able to move independently. (It’s very fun to watch.)

Of course, a trainer is on-site to assist your children if they need it. This is a fun, CRAZY experience to have in Austin and kids absolutely love it.

50. Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum

Umlauf Sculpture Garden & Museum is a beautiful sculpture garden in the middle of Austin. The American sculptor Charles Umlauf's artistic creations are the focus of this museum and outdoor sculpture garden.

If you’re looking for things to do in Austin for slightly older children, Umlauf could be an excellent option. (It’s not quite as carefree as something like the Nature and Science Center where you can just let the kids run around and go crazy.)

However, Umaluf does do a good job of trying to make this experience as kid-friendly as possible.

For instance, kids 12 & under are free, and they offer storytime for little ones. Also, all of the statues are lightly waxed in case the kids want to (gently) touch them.

Twin Falls is a swimming hole in the Barton Creek Greenbelt. If you park at Barton Creek Greenbelt Trailhead at Mopac and 360, it’s just about a ½ mile (downhill) hike to get there.

Keep in mind that the water is typically flowing and lovely in the late spring/early summer months, but it can be completely dried up in the late summer/fall months.

53. See A Drive-In Movie at Blue Starlite

This is such a fun thing to do in Austin with kids! A drive-in movie theater experience is incredibly fun (compared to today's traditional theaters) because it’s a very different experience.

Blue Starlite Drive-in is the first and only little urban drive-in in the world! It’s where independent movies, cult classics, and family favorites are shown on a big screen.

This is not your average mega-sized drive-in theater; instead, it offers a cozy, Austin-inspired atmosphere with only 15 to 20 parking spaces. This is definitely an Austin summer activity you’ll want to do again and again.

When you're looking for fun things to do with kids in Austin (or any city!), you'll most likely want to have some criteria in place. You’ll want the adventures to be age appropriate (duh), most likely ending earlier in the day if your children are young, and activities that will hold your kids’ attention for as long as possible.

A tip for visiting Austin with kids: Almost any time of year is a good time to visit Austin with kids. Summer is obviously one of the most popular times for families to take vacations, but if you can swing a fall or winter trip, the cold weather months are actually a great time to visit Austin. Why? It’s less expensive and less crowded, and Austin has pretty mild winters.
